Hi! My name is shujat and I'm an English teacher from Toronto, pakistan. And today
we're gonna take a look at some popular English proverbs. Like any language
English has a lot of Proverbs. Proverbs are maybe old pieces of advice that have
been passed on from generation to generation, information about wisdom or
expressions that remind us of what our good things are not good things to do. So,
today we're going to go through a few of the most common ones that you'll hear.
Two wrongs do not make a right. Two wrongs do not make a right is a little
piece of wisdom that it's not a good idea to try to get revenge on someone
who did something wrong to you. The idea is that if they did something wrong and
if you do something wrong, that is two wrongs and that does not necessarily
make a right situation. So, this wisdom is don't try to get revenge on someone who
has done something wrong to you. The pen is mightier than the sword. This is a
very old proverb that kind of explains to us that sometimes it's better to
articulate your idea and try to persuade someone or try to convince someone with
words than to force someone to do something. So, the sword kind of
represents violence and the pen represents words. So, usually if you want
to get into a fight with someone, it's better to think of a way that you can
explain your argument with words in a peaceful way. The squeaky wheel gets the
grease. The squeaky wheel now what that means is that's a wheel that makes a
loud high-pitched noise. And usually if you think of this literally, a wheel on a
bicycle might make a lot of squeaky sounds if it doesn't have enough oil or
grease. So, the idea is you put grease or oil on it and it stops making noise. So,
we use this proverb when it comes people. So, when people complain and make
noise usually they get a solution to their problem. So, sometimes if you are
not getting what you want it's important to say something because the squeaky
wheel gets the grease. So, you will be given what you need if you talk about it.
When in Rome do as the Romans do. This is one I think is quite simple and quite
clear. This really means that when you're in a situation and you're kind of like
an outsider you don't know how things work. Perhaps, you are at a new job or
maybe you are visiting a new country. You should do as the other people do. So, you
can copy and follow what they do.This is quite useful when you travel actually.
You can kind of learn how things work in a country just by observing how the
locals do it. Nothing ventured nothing gained.
Again, this is a pretty simple straightforward proverb. The idea is that
if you don't try to do something if you don't take a risk and maybe go for
adventure and try to accomplish something, you will gain nothing. So, if
you want to gain anything you must take a risk and you must put in an effort and
that's the idea here. No man is an island. This one's quite popular too. The idea is
that people need other people, and people are connected. So, no one is really
completely independent of society. So, really what this means is that everyone
needs people. People who live in glass houses should not throw stones. Now, this
one's a bit of a clever piece of advice. If you imagine, if you lived in the class
house, and you threw stones this might destroy the house. The idea here is that
if you are not perfect yourself, you are not strong you do not have cement walls,
perhaps, you should not throw stones, you should not criticize others. So, this is
about hypocrisy. So, don't throw stones or don't criticize people if you are not
perfect yourself. Keep your friends close and your enemies closer. Again, this is a
pretty clever proverb. The idea here is that it's important actually know who
your enemies are, and maybe why they're your enemies. So, you can learn a lot from
your enemies, and maybe you learned a lot from yourself about why these people are
people you don't like or maybe why you have a problem with them. So, it's good to
be really close to your enemies you can maybe learn more than from them than you
can your friends. A picture is worth a thousand words. This way this is a very
common proverb actually. And again this means if you look at a picture or an
image, you can really see a lot of information that is conveyed there. So,
pictures can really express quite a lot. The same with video. So, a picture is
worth a thousand words means that kind of demonstrates the value of pictures.
There's no such thing as a free lunch. Again, this is a very good proverb. This
basically says that in life nothing is ever free. So, many things may appear free,
but there's always a hidden cost. Even if you do get a free lunch, there's probably
a reason why you're getting that free lunch. So, the important thing to remember
here is nothing in life is really free. So, those were just a few of some of the
most popular English proverbs. Maybe you know a couple of yourself. Feel free to
add any in the comments below or even just write down which one is your
